WORD from the CVB's

Cool Down in Fort Worth this August
By David A. DuBois, CMP, CAE, CTA, President and CEO of the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

As the temperature heats up, enjoy all the cool things to do in the City of Cowboys and Culture. From creative geniuses and works of art to celebrations of Western heritage, Fort Worth is the place to be this August!

Visit the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History to see “Leonardo Da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius.” This internationally acclaimed exhibition presents more than 60 models of da Vinci’s famous machines, inventions and designs based on ancient codices. The multi-faceted exhibition also includes reproductions of 12 of Leonardo’s most important paintings. The exhibition runs through September 6.

Experience the world of the far away as never before at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. “Georgia O’Keeffe and the Far Away: Nature and Image” features a 3,000 square foot exhibit that includes several of O’Keeffe’s paintings, her camping gear, numerous sketches, selected pieces of her clothing, multiple photos, and many other images documenting O’Keeffe’s affinity with the West. The exhibition runs through September 6.

Celebrate Fort Worth’s Western heritage at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo held every Friday and Saturday night at Cowtown Coliseum. See real cowboys and cowgirls compete in all kinds of events including bull riding, calf roping, and barrel racing. While in the Stockyards, make sure to see the historic gunfight reenactments in Stockyards Station. The gunfights are held each weekend after the 4 p.m. Fort Worth Herd cattle drive.

End Summer with a Blast!
By Lisa A. Samuel-McCowan, Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau

The night sky overlooking Grapevine will be illuminated with bursting fireworks as Grapevine presents Friday Night Fireworks every Friday night through Sept. 3 starting at 9:30 p.m. Come together for a memorable summer evening in Grapevine and a 12-minute fireworks show taking place over beautiful Lake Grapevine.

Cool off in the Palace Theatre with a great flick like 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen on Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m. When a large black monolith is found beneath the surface of the moon, the supposition is that it was intentionally buried. When Dr. David Bowman finds faults in the expeditionary spacecraft’s communications system, he discovers more than he ever wanted to know.

Be sure to hop aboard the Grapevine Vintage Railroad this summer. Get in on the fun as desperate desperados chase the train on horseback: board it and rob it! The entertaining staged train robberies happen every Saturday and Sunday on the Grapevine to Fort Worth excursion.

While in Grapevine, be sure to stroll down to the Grapevine and Farmers Markets. The open-air Grapevine Market is open every Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Oct. 16. Shoppers will find an eclectic array of items at Grapevine Market, including handmade jewelry, distinctive home décor, quality antiques, and more. The Grapevine Market is located between the 100 and 300 blocks of Main Street at Liberty Park, just across from City Hall. The freshest produce in North Texas can be found at Grapevine’s Farmers Market on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. through Oct. 30. Farmers Market is just behind the gazebo located in the 300 block of Main Street.

Beat the Heat in Granbury
By Charlie McIlvain, CTP, Director, Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau

A short 35 miles southwest of Fort Worth is a refreshing alternative to the longer drives that some of us take when vacationing in Texas. The perfectly preserved town square of Granbury is inviting to those who love to stroll down sidewalks among buildings that are reminiscent of a long ago era. The shopping, dining, wine and chocolate pairing, and wine tasting aren’t bad either!

Beachcombers and water enthusiasts will love the white sand of the new city beach. Palm trees and Tiki huts lend a tropical feel to this new addition. The city beach features water areas and play spaces, tube rentals, and a view of beautiful Lake Granbury. And you won’t find any oil slicks on the Granbury Beach. If you like aquatic activities bring your boat, water skis, wakeboards and fishing gear.

Entertainment is key to any Staycation. Live musical performances for every age can be found at Granbury Live. This August enjoy “Good Vibrations” and “’50s Class Reunion.” Granbury’s 1886 Opera House will shine as well with the ever-popular Cats and The Sunshine Boys.

When was the last time you watched a movie under the stars? Granbury’s own Brazos Drive-In – the only wooden drive-in left in Texas – shows first-run movies every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For just a little bit per carload your family can enjoy movies the way our mom and dad did in the ’50s – snack bar included.

When you get hungry dining is a treat in Granbury. Something for every taste and every food type is available such as family-style restaurants, tea rooms, martini-bar, ‘50s style soda shops, coffee houses, hamburger joints, barbeque, Tex-Mex and Cajun.

At day’s end your choice of accommodations is endless as well. Granbury boasts several new hotels and over 20 luxurious bed & breakfast inns.

Truly the perfect Staycation location is Granbury, Texas. For additional information call the Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-877-936-1201 or log on to www.granburytx.com.
