Hear the sounds of summer this July in Fort Worth! From symphonic melodies to the crack of the baseball bat to the musical score of Fats Waller, experience summer’s high notes in the “City of Cowboys and Culture.” During July, enjoy the soothing music of the Fort Worth Symphony in the beautiful Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Don’t miss Ain’t Misbehavin: The Fats Waller Musical Show at Jubilee Theatre. This vibrant musical revue is a tribute to the black musicians of the early 1900s that centers on the music of one of the most prolific musicians of the time, Thomas “Fats” Waller. A Tony Award winner, this musical has become a classic of African-American theatre that is sure to bring the house down and keep you singing, and swinging, into the streets. Our nation is turning a grand 232 years old this 4th of July! What better way to mark America’s birthday and freedom than a giant celebration? Come see the stars and stripes at the 43rd Annual USA Independence Day Parade in Arlington where this year’s theme is the “Bill of Rights.” The event includes floats, marching bands, military color guards and dignitaries commemorating the “Land of the free and the home of the brave!” The parade starts at 9 a.m. on 4 July. Head over to Richard Simpson Park for “Light up the Lake” on July 3. This free community celebration includes live entertainment, vendors, bounce houses, arts, crafts, a lighted boat regatta and a 20-minute fireworks show on Lake Arlington. The party starts at 5:30 p.m., and the fireworks will begin at dark. Bring a lawn chair, blanket and the whole family to enjoy the festivities and the fireworks show. Make your way to Grapevine for summertime activities! The first significant national 9/11 Flight Crew Memorial will be dedicated in Grapevine, Texas Friday, July 4 at 10 a.m. at 1000 Texan Trail. This $1 million public monument and plaza is 1.5 times life size and sits atop Texas limestone. The figures on the monument pay tribute to all flight crews – representing the valor, dedication, and commitment that flight crews exhibit. This memorial is important to the history of aviation because it remembers the lost and honors those who strive for excellence each day. Independence Day wouldn’t be complete without a colorful Fireworks Extra vaganza. So, find your spot and stake a claim near Lake Grapevine on Friday, July 4 to watch fireworks light up the sky at the 26th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza! The pyrotechnics will launch off the shores of Oak Grove Park at 9:30 p.m., but the rockets’ red glare can be viewed from any lakeside location. Also tune into 98.7 FM KLUV at 9:30 p.m. on July 4 to hear musical accompaniment to the Fireworks Extravaganza, featuring customized patriotic music synchronized with a 30-minute spectacular fireworks display. Along with the other Grapevine events during the patriotic weekend, Grapevine also brings a summer wine trail, “Red, Whites & You!” on Saturday, July 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning at Cross Timbers Winery, at 805 N. Fossil Rim Offers New Wildlife Experiences With summer in full swing, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is offering several new amenities to make the visitor experience more enjoyable. There have also been several innovations to the Fossil Rim web site, such as allowing shopping at the Nature Store on-line. A new animal flipbook and audio CD are available to enhance the drive-thru experience while taking the drive-thru tour. The book goes hand in hand with the audio CD and helps visitors identify the animals and look for animals that may be out of sight. The book and CD can be purchased at the front gate or the audio CD can be purchased on-line from the Nature Store for $9.99. The Nature Store is always a popular stop on the tour and visitors have the opportunity to browse one of the largest selections of animal-related gifts in Texas. The 80th annual North Texas State Fair in Denton, Texas presents nine days of exciting rodeo events August 15-23, 2008. The Fair and the Denton County Livestock Show are flanked by all kinds of fun for everyone in the family. Commemorating this landmark 80th anniversary year will be the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame featuring 2008 inductee Sammy Andrews, PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year in 2002 and for the North Texas State Fair for many years. The Hall of Fame will showcase the best of the best in all aspects of rodeo. The 2008 fair also presents popular annual favorite attractions like the creative arts show, photo exhibit, and the DATCU Fun Zone. Highlighting the Fun Zone will be a trackless train, Pee Wee Rodeo, beauty pageants, and the newest addition – "Pets Overboard" featuring some traditional and not-so-traditional pets. Kids can also look forward to bounce houses, games, pony rides and a petting zoo. Music is as much a part of the Fair as are the cowboys and livestock. The main concert stage will tout some of Texas' best talent: Stoney La Rue, Rest less Heart, and the Randy Rogers Band for starters. There is a concert every night. Admittance is $12 for adults and $5 for kids ages 6-12. Kids under 6 are free. Tickets include access to the concerts, rodeo, livestock show, and all the exhibits.
