During May, Fort Worth comes alive with history, music, and family fun at exciting festivals throughout the month. Each of these unique events offers great entertainment options in the “City of Cowboys and Culture.” Begin the month with A Great Hall Celebrates: Bass Hall’s 10th Anniversary Festival April 29-May 4. The festival features a series of unique perfo rmances, including Learning How to Fly, Jack Ingram, Chuck Mangione and Dianne Reeves, Liza Minnelli and Kirk Franklin. The fourth opera will be a new production of Angels in America by Peter Eötvös, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tony Kushner. April Showers Bring May–Rides! This summer it’s going to be MEGA amounts of FUN at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, the largest water park in North Texas. Days Grapevine’s 24th annual Main Street Days will be a fun-filled outdoor adventure on May 16, 17, & 18 in Historic Downtown Grapevine, where the popular festival highlights the city as the ideal place to enjoy an active lifestyle and the great outdoors. Grapevine is the perfect spot for active lifestyles and outdoor enthusiasts. Festival guests will have the opportunity to watch and/or participate in lumberjack shows, a live white tiger exhibit, scuba diving, BMX stunts, rock climbing, quad bungee jumping, ridin’ the rails, kayaking, a fishing tank, a 10K walk/run, and much more. Traditional Main Street Days fun will delight festival guests throughout the weekend with gunfighters of the Old West and non-stop entertainment on four stages featuring a variety of music from rock and R&B to bluegrass and country. Main Street Days will also feature three wine pavilions featuring Grapevine and Texas wines. Enjoy arts and crafts, exhilarating carnival rides, and short runs on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. You can also take the Festival Flyer train excursion into the festival. The train will depart the Fort Worth Stockyards at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday - pulling into Grapevine’s Cotton Belt Depot around 11:30 a.m. Spend an active day at Main Street Days, then hop aboard the Festival Flyer again at 6 p.m. to return to the Stockyards. Main Street Days will open May 16 at 10 a.m., and as an added bonus, admission is free to everyone until 5 p.m.! Hours are Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. General Admission is $7 and $5 for those 62+ and children 6-12. Admission is free for children five and under. Preserve Granbury’s 2008 Sundays in May This year’s event looks to be one for the history books. The ever-popular Tradesman’s Day kicks off the event on Sunday, May 4 at the Tarleton Langdon Center. This outdoor market will feature handmade crafts and primitive antiques along with artisans and craftsmen demonstrating their trades from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Demonstrations will include weaving, knitting, boot making and early woodworking techniques. Admission is free. Sunday, May 18 visitors can relive Texas history as they stroll through the historic Granbury Cemetery, high atop a hill north of the town square as they participate in this year’s Cemetery Stroll. Costumed re-enactors tell the tales of Granbury’s history, from pioneer settlement to its historic preservation efforts. Those portrayed will include Granbury’s namesake Confederate General Hiram Granbury, the legendary Jesse James and descendents of the Alamo legend, Davy Crockett. Strolls are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Trolley transportation will be provided to and from the site. Admission is $10. Tickets are limited and will be available at the gate or at the Granbury Visitor Center. A reading of an original play by Randy Clements, “Jesse James is Buried Here,” will conclude the Sundays celebration on May 25. Legend has it that Jesse is buried right here in Granbury Cemetery. Start time for the reading is 7 p.m. at the Tarleton Langdon Concert Hall at the corner of Brazos & Bridge Streets. Admission is $10. Lone Star State Dulcimer Festival
The Lone Star State Dulcimer Festival is set for Oakdale Park in Glen Rose, May 9 through 11. This will be the 27th year for the event and will feature a series of concerts, workshops, crafts booths and fun, with admission being free. Concerts will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and will end that evening with an old fashioned square dance at 10 p.m. Saturday’s concerts get underway at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Featured performers will include Bill Robinson and Greg Ferguson, Bonnie Carroll, Small Potatoes, Ann Norris and Dana Hamilton. Saturday will also end with a concert at 10 p.m. Free workshops will be available on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Free classes will also be available in guitar, autoharp, and mountain dulcimer. Other activities will include gospel music at 9 a.m. on Sunday and a Texas liar’s contest at 10 a.m. on Sunday. There will not be an admission charge for any of these events. Also arts & crafts booths will be open throughout the festival. The highlight of the event will be the Texas State Mountain Dulcimer Contest on Saturday. Other attractions in Glen Rose include Dinosaur World, Dinosaur Valley State Park, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, the Creation Evidence Museum and the historic downtown square. Denton celebrates 15th year of "grrrrrreat" family event Kick off summer at the 15th Annual Dog Days of Denton Celebration in Quakertown Park (north of the Civic Center) at 321 E. McKinney Street in downtown Denton Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. This original festival is ALL about dogs! Dogs and their people can roam the park and find something to do, including canine contests, live music, demonstrations in freestyle dancing, agility, disc and flyball. Plus, visit more than 75 booths featuring arts and crafts, pet care services and pet healthcare information, games, fantastic festival foods, animal adoptions, and more. Clifford the Big Red Dog and Emily Elizabeth return for story-times in addition to great kids' entertainment throughout the day. Festival attendees can also choose from an array of costumes and have a "Glamfur Shot" taken and have their paws read by the Great "Barkini" who will "fore-tail" their futures. Dogs and their people can also strut their stuff on stage and compete in the stupid pet tricks contest, a dog singing contest, or the official 2009 Dog Days Spokesdog Pageant (pre-registration for pageant required). This year, Milk Bone will make a stop at the Dog Days of Denton festival during the Del Monte's Make a Milk Bone Moment Tour.
