120th Anniversary of Professional Baseball in Fort Worth The Fort Worth Cats Baseball Club will mark the 120th anniversary of the beginning of professional baseball in Fort Worth when the Cats begin the 2008 season May 8 at LaGrave Field against Sioux Falls. The back-to-back-to-back champion Cats, 2005-2007, have accomplished quite a bit since LaGrave Field opened in 2002. The ballpark was built where the old LaGrave Field stood from 1926-1967. The new Cats have embraced the history surrounding the franchise by retiring four jerseys. Bobby Bragan (No. 10 in 2003), Duke Snider (No. 4 in 2004), Maury Wills (No. 6 in 2005), and Sparky Anderson (No. 1 in 2006) all have had their jersey numbers placed above the Knothole Gang in right field. The Cats’ rich history is shown throughout the ballpark including photos in the two dugout suites honoring players from the 1920s through the ‘40s and ‘50s when the Cats were a farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Unique promotions like Bobby Bragan managing three years ago at the age of 87 and Bob Schieffer, the CBS News anchor who grew up in Fort Worth, bobbblehead doll in 2006 have garnered national attention and are a huge part of Cats’ baseball games. This year, the Cats will honor Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief with a bobblehead doll on May 30. The team will also have 15 fireworks shows during the season including one every Friday night the Cats play at LaGrave Field. Affordable family entertainment in a county fair atmosphere is what Fort Worth Cats baseball is all about. And the view of downtown Fort Worth at night is breathtaking.
